Monuments / Public Art

Grey's Monument
Grey's Monument is a monument to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey built in 1838 in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It was erected to acclaim Earl Grey for the passing of the Great Reform Act of 1832 and stands at the head of Grey Street. It consists of a statue of Lord Grey standing atop a 41 m high column. The monument lends its name to Monument Metro station, a station on the Tyne and Wear Metro located directly underneath, and to the Monument Mall Shopping Centre.

St. Nicholas' Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas is the Mother Church of the most northerly diocese in England. Dating mainly from the 13th and 14th centuries, it is a magnificent building. Its most distinguishing feature is the Lantern Tower (1448), a prominent landmark for over five hundred years. Despite all the developments in modern building, the tower remains the most daring architectural structure in Newcastle. (more info.)

Discovery Museum

Hancock Museum
The Hancock Museum is currently closed and due to reopen in 2009 under the Great North Museum project. More information can be found here.

Museum of Antiquities
A principal museum of archaeology, its visitors are those who wish to know more about the history of the region, especially Hadrian's Wall and the Roman frontier.
It has a renowned collection of artefacts, models and archives relating to the Wall, and a full-scale reconstruction of the Temple to Mithras at Carrawburgh. Other displays illustrate the variety of life in the region from early prehistory to the 17th century. (more info.)

North East War Museum
A museum of WW2 and other militaria created by members of the North East Military Vehicle Club within the historical, last remaining Pavilion of the 1929 North East Coast Exhibition and with the kind co-operation of the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.(more info.)

Shefton Museum
The Shefton Museum, located within the Department of Classics, holds a small but widely recognised collection of artefacts from the Greek world.
The museum also holds a smaller, but highly significant, collection of metal objects, mostly in bronze, of Greek and Etruscan manufacture. (more info.)
